I can’t say enough about this little school. My son takes AP classes here a la carte, and he loves it. The class sizes are so small, the students develop great bonds with one another and the teachers. The students are international, studious, kind and caring. The teachers are just amazing–they have graduate degrees and a huge love of their subject matters and their students. When the local schools closed down on a Friday due to COVID, High Bluff was fully operating on line by Tuesday morning. And they recognized that this was a time that students needed connection and learning more than ever, so they canceled spring break. My son feels completely supported by this school, and looks forward to every class. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth every penny.

My daughters experience at High Bluff Academy has been amazing. The teachers are fantastic and offer a level of support that is rare to find. The teachers truly want the students to succeed and make learning interesting and fun, not stressful and overehelming. Jill has created and environment where all students are supported and nurtured to be the best that they can be. They work around the kids schedules at Torrey Pines, which makes it possible for a seamless schedule this further reducing stress. We are truly grateful to Jill and the entire staff for providing a true gift to students.

My son was really struggling at the large public school in our neighborhood. He is very bright but was not able to focus due to the large class size. He had a lot of anxiety about going to school and was not connecting with any of his teachers. He transferred to High Bluff Academy in the beginning of 11th grade and it was the best decision we ever made. He loved all of his teachers and was inspired to work hard and get good grades. The caring, family type atmosphere was very welcoming. Although he had not excelled in math or science at previous schools, he was very inspired by his teachers at High Bluff and now he is a junior in college majoring in Microbiology and wants to go on to a PhD program and become a genetics researcher. I never would have dreamed that his life would turn around so dramatically just by changing schools. His success and self-confidence today would not have been possible without High Bluff Academy.

The process of learning should be enjoyable. High Bluff Academy does this. The small class sizes, the caring teachers including Jill and Nancy, and the individualized learning is priceless. HBA made all the difference in the world to my son. He looked forward to going to school. A quote from my son, ” I’ve never met teachers like HBA who care so much”. That says it all. I highly recommend High Bluff.

I have two sons that currently attends Torrey Pines High School. My oldest son struggled academically in math and science courses so he attended High Bluff and excelled in a smaller ratio environment and got an “A”. My younger son is currently attending High Bluff and I know he will be successful as well. The teachers take the time to make sure the students understand the material and do well on test. Jill is very knowledgable in education. I like her hands on approach in guiding parents. I highly recommend High Bluff to any parent who want the best education for their kids.

The best. Quality teachers, individualized or small classes, many options worth exploring, unmatched flexibility. Great leadership. My son took many classes there over the years and being at High Bluff Academy was key to his admission to a highly selective college.

My daughter had a great experience at High Bluff Academy. She enjoyed her chemistry instructor, and was able to understand the subject matter much better than in her class at Torrey Pines. Prior to signing her up for chemistry, I spoke with the owner who was extremely helpful as well.

As a student of High Bluff Academy, I enjoyed every moment, and it was a lot of fun there. I have experienced various educational and interesting subjects and situations. There are many great teacher who are a life saver of students like me who are trying to challenge themselves and their mindsets.
In my point of view, High Bluff Academy have many amazing teachers, but Ms. Ellen Sullivan and Mr. Geoff Stevens are th best. Ms. Ellen Sullivan is a kind hearted teacher who brings many various materials in the class that each is unique and with her guidance on each lessons is quite noticeable. Besides that, Mr. Geoff Stevens is amazing man who impresses me every single day with his knowledge and skills. Being in his class, his method of teaching is very different and with his skills talking and arguing with him about lessons is very fun and educational.
High Bluff Academy has been a great experience for me. I transferred here after a terrible experience with a public school teacher and I quickly found my place in this school. Every teacher is kind, approachable, and is genuinely caring. I have been able to achieve way more thanks to this school. I have been fortunate to have a guidance counselor whose office I can walk into at any time. As soon as I find an award/scholarship/program to apply for, he instantly helps me and does as much research as possible to support me. He is always looking for programs or different things which will help his students succeed and attend the college of their dreams. The school has a great spirit, Maya Hankin runs an amazing ASB program on top of being an amazing math teacher (she got me to stop hating math). We recently had a fantastic spirit week which she ran. At the same time, when my family went through our challenges, the school leadership: Jill, Nick, and George sent flowers to my home.
I have really enjoyed my experience at HBA so far. One of the best parts of my experience so far are the teachers because of the one on one help. Some other things I have liked about going to school here is the amazing food every Friday, the students, and the classes. Overall, my experience at HBA has been great.

If you are looking for an alternative high school, I suggest you check out High Bluff Academy (HBA) in Del Mar, CA. My son, who has dyslexia/ADHD, just finished his first year at HBA and has benefited from HBA’s small class ratios, highly qualified, very caring teachers, and a truly individualized teaching approach where teachers meet weekly to discuss student progress and how to better support them. My son is taking HBA’s rigorous college prep courses, including AP courses, and since this school started out being a tutoring and college test prep center, I feel confident he will be ready for AP exams and SAT/ACTs when that happens. So far, with reasonable amounts of homework, and by taking the “Tutorial” class HBA offers, my son routinely finishes his daily homework (with teacher support) AT SCHOOL before he comes home! This has given my son a healthy school vs. home life balance with time to pursue interests outside of school and get required SLEEP! We never thought we would invest in private high school, but since high school grades really matter to get into college, what’s the point in saving for college if our son isn’t getting the education, support, and grades he needs right now? I have a very happy son, who is doing really well, and because he is at HBA, I don’t have to constantly interact with teachers, staff, and admin to get my kid what he needs to be successful. Jill Duoto, the founder at High Bluff Academy says they are still accepting applications for the 2019-20 school year, so it’s not too late to check it out!

Imagine a high school where students check their egos at the door and where students take care of each other. Better yet, imagine a school where students flourish and enjoy learning.
That, says Jill Duoto, is what you’ll find at High Bluff Academy, a fully accredited high school housed in the center of an office park in Carmel Valley.
Duoto, the school’s principal, founded HBA as a tutoring and test prep center in 2002 with her husband, Michael. But as they listened to students and parents seeking a better way of learning, they expanded to offer a college prep, high school curriculum as well as a 13th year — a pre-college year — for students not quite ready to tackle college.
They also continue their specialized tutoring and test classes, through summer school (classes start Aug. 4), after-school and weekend programs.
Meanwhile, HBA’s expansion continues this fall with more electives, from French and Mandarin to computer science classes, and more clubs to meet the individualized needs of its students, who come from the surrounding communities as well as from around the world. Some are students at neighboring schools who come for classes that don’t fit their public school schedules or because they need a flexible schedule to accommodate competitive sports or career aspirations.
All courses meet or exceed University of California and California State University standards, and while standard classes help fill gaps in knowledge, Honors and AP classes challenge the advanced students.
Too often, Duoto said, parents don’t recognize problems their youngsters might be having as they transition to high school, which requires more independence than middle school. Then the youngsters find themselves in a “big intimidating environment” and don’t ask for help or don’t know where to turn.
“They are overwhelmed academically,” she added. “A lot of times, the issues can be social or emotional, such as the drama of jockeying for position in the social hierarchy of a big school.”
Some students, such as those with learning disabilities or ADD, might be overcome by the extra stimulation and distractions of a large school.
But at HBA, where classes are small and teachers know each student, she said, “the feeling of being overwhelmed goes away; there’s a sense of relief.”
That new feeling “boils down to knowing they belong, that people care, that they can learn at their level and their own pace.”
When a student says, “Hey, I need help,” it is there in the form of tutoring that is built into the school day, with after-school homework sessions and small groups.
And with the small student body, teachers and administrators can act quickly to respond to the students’ energy — or lack of same.
Duoto said at the end of the school year when distraction tends to set in, a kayaking outing was planned on short notice and the staff “created additional field trips to keep the kids motivated.”
As the school matures, it has added a community service coordinator to match students’ interests to outside projects, and has given a teacher added responsibility as activities coordinator. The administrators are also enlisting more parent involvement in helping with field trips.
While expanding programs is essential to High Bluff’s future, Duoto said the underlying goal is to see students flourish. “I like seeing kids that are happy going to school.”
